Curative, Palliative & Rehabilitative Services Directorate

The Curative, Palliative & Rehabilitative Services Directorate is dedicated to ensuring that all residents of Dire Dawa have access to high-quality, safe, and compassionate clinical care. We oversee the standard of medical treatments across regional facilities, manage life-saving blood bank services, and coordinate care for patients requiring long-term recovery and palliative support.

Our Mandate

Our mandate is to elevate the quality of clinical healthcare by establishing strict service standards, supporting healthcare facilities in delivering evidence-based medical care, and ensuring the availability of essential medical inputs like safe blood. We bridge the gap between immediate clinical intervention and long-term patient recovery, ensuring a continuum of care that respects patient dignity.

Strategic Objectives

  • Enhance the quality and safety of clinical care in all hospitals and health centers.
  • Ensure a reliable, safe, and adequate supply of blood and blood products through the regional blood bank.
  • Integrate palliative care services into standard clinical practice to support patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses.
  • Develop and expand rehabilitative services to aid physical and functional recovery.
  • Implement rigorous clinical quality monitoring and patient safety protocols across all facilities.

Key Programs & Services

To achieve our mandate, the directorate oversees several specialized teams focused on critical areas of patient care and recovery:

Health Service Quality Monitoring

Focuses on the continuous evaluation of clinical care. This team establishes performance benchmarks, monitors patient outcomes, and ensures adherence to national clinical guidelines and infection prevention protocols across all health facilities.

Regional Blood Bank Services

Coordinates the collection, testing, storage, and distribution of safe blood and blood products. The team works closely with hospitals to ensure emergency and surgical needs are met while promoting voluntary blood donation campaigns.

Palliative Care Coordination

Works to integrate compassionate care for patients with serious, chronic, or terminal illnesses. This includes pain management, psychological support, and home-based care guidance to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Rehabilitative Services

Supports the physical and functional recovery of patients who have suffered from severe injuries, strokes, or chronic disabilities. The team works to expand access to physiotherapy and occupational therapy within the regional health network.
